Japan’s First: Ikeda Elementary School designated as an International Safe School
For the first time in Japan, Ikeda Elementary School attached to Osaka Kyoiku Univristy received an International Safe School (ISS) designation under World Health Organization (WHO).ISS is a designation program that honors schools where ongoing and organizational efforts are made to promote the school safety, collectively by the children, teachers/staff, parents, and communities, as opposed to schools with established safety measures already in place.Since the incident on June 8th, 2001, the school has implemented researches and practices of education focused on the school safety promotion, and shared the results with all corners of the country. In particular, the school’s implementation of the “safety course” as a school with customized educational curriculum under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), was highly regarded.The designation ceremony was held in the school’s gym on March 5th at 9:30 a.m. Six representatives from various organizations signed on the agreement. A child representative’s Safe School declaration wrapped the event, with a pledge on further promotion of school safety.
