Special Lecture by Dr. John O'Regan of the Institute of Education, University of London
A special lecture by Dr. John O'Regan, a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Education, University of London, with which Osaka Kyoiku University has an educational exchange agreement, was held on Wednesday, October 17th on the Kashiwara Campus. The lecture was hosted by the International Center and the Department of English Education, and attended by around 40 students and educators.
A prominent scholar of linguistics, Dr. O'Regan's recent research interests include language policy and intercultural communication in an era of globalization. His academic duties include supervision of Master and Ph.D. students in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
The lecture, which was titled "English as a world language: some perspectives on teaching and learning in a globalized age," analyzed the origins and effects of the rise of English as a global language, with specific reference to first-language influence on the speaker, as exemplified in East Asia including Japan. For learners of English in Japan and students planning to become English instructors, the content was extremely interesting.
After listening attentively for approximately one hour, the participants engaged in discussion with appropriate questions and comments proving their grasp of the lecture content.
