Completion the solar energy system: top-class among national universities

One step toward our transformation into an eco-friendly university that aggressively promotes global environment protection and the use of clean energies – the completion ceremony of the solar energy system, which has a top-class scale and generation capacity among the national universities, was held on site in Kashiwara campus on April 6th (Tues).The array of 960 solar panels (each panel size: 99cm×150cm), placed in ten rows, on a 3000-square-meter site located on the south side of the Kashiwara campus, looks spectacular. It will attract many eyes as a new landmark on Kashiwara campus. On the completed system, the solar panels are evenly installed with a 20-degree southward tilt, in order to capture the sunlight efficiently. The capacity of photovoltaic cells is approximately 200kW, and the annual energy production is approximately 215MWh, which equals to 3.3% of the annual power consumption of the entire Kashiwara campus, and can cover the annual power consumption of the library’s lighting facility.According to the facility division, this system contributes to the environment by reducing approximately 68 tonnes of CO2 emission, which could be converted to about 19 hectare of forest, close to 30% of Kashiwara campus area (approx. 67 hectare).In the ceremony, President Nagao said, ‘’This is a part of our efforts to create an eco-friendly environment, and I am pleased to see the completion of this facility dedicated to eco-friendliness.”
